ABOUT ME
Welcome to my web site.
I live in the beautiful St. Margaret’s Bay area of Nova Scotia. I paint and exhibit with two talented art groups; Artscape and Abstract studio.
I have always been involved in art. I grew up in a large family of creative people. My childhood years were lived in rural areas of Nova Scotia. Nature was the context for imaginary games and dreams. Art making was a close partner; drawing, painting, working in sand and clay, building ‘castles’. There were hours and hours of intense creative play.
Pursuing art at the college level was a natural fit. I attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and was especially drawn to the Art education division. It was a place of extraordinary vision and creative energy. After Graduation, I became the art teacher at Sackville High School. What an amazing job! It was constantly changing and demanding. I was there for 30 years, teaching mostly art, but later, design related courses using current digital technologies. I immersed myself in creative curriculum development. The best part of the job however, was the students. High school students have such emotional intensity, creativity and idealism. Art gives them a voice. I was privileged to be part of that.
Retirement has given me the opportunity to pursue painting fully. I work in both a representational and abstract manner. The area I live in is truly inspirational. Prince Edward Island and the prairies are also favourite places. Seemingly mundane subject matter; weeds, fields, things by the side of the road, meditative places are quite beautiful to me. My world is full of compelling intricate detail, full of possibility. I am never without my camera.
Colour, light, form and movement are important in my work. Representation allows me to celebrate nature’s subtleties, while abstraction makes me work with the nature of paint itself. There is a play between randomness and control and a constant perceptual shift that happens with each mark and application of colour. This visual dialogue connects me to an inner energy that is both intellectual and emotional.
The art shown on this site was created over the past 3 years. Enjoy.
